The EF 50mm F1.4 USM is Canon's mid-level offering in a range stuffed full of 50mm primes, covering all budgets from the ultra-cheap 50mm F1.8 mkII through to the stratospherically-priced 50mm F1.2 L USM. Although it was introduced in June 1993, fully seven years after the birth of the EOS system, it can actually trace its roots back much earlier, being based on the classic manual focus FD

The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is only 2.9” around and weighs in at 290g. The 50L is both shorter and lighter than the new Sigma ART’s 3.93” and 815g or the Zeiss Otus’s 5.66” length and 1030g weight. It has a useful minimum focus distance of .45m/1.5 feet, and an average/pedestrian .15x magnification.

The Canon is a known coma machine (it's so bad it can be seen clearly in the APS-C frame wide open). The Sigma is better but not by much (again, per Lenstip's results). At least the Sigma has less vignetting (though still a lot in absolute terms). I have used my Canon 24/1.4 II for astro, but not on full frame and with quite some reservations.

It is the least expensive f /1.4 aperture lens that Canon currently manufactures. It is constructed with a plastic body and a metal mount.

Verdict. The Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 USM L II gave us some mixed feelings during the tests. If you use it at its sweet settings - that's between f/4 and f/8 - the lens will be about as good as it gets for a lens in this class. It's extremely sharp here and there's no significant vignetting to speak of. Lateral CAs are also no serious problem and
About a year ago I sold off my Sigma 24mm art and replaced it with a EF 24mm f/1.4L II. I was sick of the inconsistency in focus of the Sigma art lenses in general, and I just wanted to change everything over to first party lenses. However, the 24mm 1.4 II has consistently been my least favorite lens.
